3rd Grade Classroom Assignment Success Story (Discussion)

Last year, Alec Greven’s third-grade teacher encouraged her class to be “observers of the world,” focusing in on small moments and then writing about them.

Alec took the assignment to heart. For half a week, he quietly watched his classmates interact at recess and drew some insightful conclusions about their behaviour. A week later, he submitted his report called “How to Talk to Girls”.

In seven short chapters, Alec outlined a simple, common-sense strategy for “boys with crushes” – complete with statistics based on his observations at his elementary school.

Here’s a snip from his first chapter, The Facts of Life.

“Tip: About 73 per cent of regular girls ditch boys;

98 per cent of pretty girls ditch boys .”

He’s a straight shooter who says things like: “Pretty girls are like cars that need a lot of oil.” Did I mention he was eight when he wrote is?! Haha.

The principal suggested that copies of Alec’s work be sold at the school’s book fair, where local media covered the event. And then Ellen Degeneres called! Inspired and amused by Alec’s school assignment, she arranged a meeting for the boy and his mom with HarperCollins in New York.

At 46 pages, the book still has seven chapters and its original title. What’s new is the shiny red hard cover, the $10.99 price and the fact that it’s available in 17 countries. He’s hoping to raise another $100,000 for Stand Up To Cancer through sales.

Need a stocking stuffer for Christmas? This is definitely something everyone would enjoy! And the story behind the story is a seller on its own.

Aside from that, let’s hear what you all think!
