I agree…a diary is a great outlet to say what you want to say. You can be creative while expressing your true and personal thoughts.

I’m not entirely sure I consider my diary a piece of creative writing. I mean, you could probably publish it, but it’s not entirely creative. I’m not making anything up, just expressing some thoughts and stuff like that.
In serious creative writing, I tend to focus on a story, or a theme, and have an audience in mind as I write. I do it creatively too, employing different writing techniques and devices. I don’t do that when I write in a diary. Maybe other people do, and in that case I would consider that creative writing, but personally I don’t.

Of course you have your own opinion about creative writing. Actually, I consider my own life as a theme of writing. I think the turns, the challenges, the feelings through the journey of life have a new surprise ! So, for me, easily it can be a theme for writing.

I partly agree with the views expressed here. As far as writing in one’s personal diary is concerned, one can afford to record in a more casual (at least i think so in my case) and brief manner some important events of one’s day to day or personal/social/professional life and occasional strong ideas/emotions that come to mind from time to time. Here, i believe, the main purpose is to just have a brief chronological record of events you consider personally important to you, for your own reference (i occasionally refer :)) at a later stage and not for publicity.
I agree that it is another matter that such record of events could serve as a very important guide to facilitate creation of more serious creative works, including but not limited to writing one’s own autobiography, which may or may not be intended for general/wider/limited publicity.

When I write in my personal diary, it is my personal thoughts only. I don’t write anything with the intention of making it creative. It is just a personal record of my life. However, I guess if I were stuck for ideas in a piece of creative writing, I could get some from my dirary – my life can often be very dramatic :)

it’s a tough call; you write a diary to archive your thoughts/days, but there are times when you end up putting quite a bit of creativity into it, given the solitude….
more often than not, the matter of fact tone of a diary packs in a whole lot of expression
i think a daily blog is similar in nature; what do you think?
